Namibia Celebrates Historic Milestone as Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Becomes First Female President
Namibia has ushered in a new era of leadership as Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was sworn in as the country’s first female president on Friday. The historic event took place during Namibia’s 35th Independence Day celebration at the State House in Windhoek, with Chief Justice Peter Shivute administering the oath of office.
The inauguration, originally scheduled for the Independence Stadium, was moved indoors due to heavy rainfall. Outgoing President Nangolo Mbumba, 83, formally handed over power to Nandi-Ndaitwah, marking the beginning of her tenure as Namibia’s fifth head of state.
A Landslide Victory
Nandi-Ndaitwah, popularly known as NNN, won last year’s presidential election with over 57% of the vote. Her closest rival, Panduleni Itula, garnered 26% but rejected the results, calling the election “deeply flawed.” Despite the controversy, Nandi-Ndaitwah’s victory represents a significant step forward for gender equality in Namibian politics.
A Lifetime of Activism and Leadership
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s political journey began at the age of 14 when she joined SWAPO, Namibia’s ruling party, during the country’s struggle against South African occupation. As a young activist, she rose through the ranks, eventually leading SWAPO’s youth league. Her dedication to the liberation movement led to her arrest and detention during her high school years, forcing her to flee the country and continue her activism from exile.
After Namibia gained independence in 1988, Nandi-Ndaitwah returned home and took on various ministerial roles, including foreign affairs, tourism, child welfare, and information. Now 72, she brings decades of experience and a deep commitment to national development.
A Vision for Unity and Economic Growth
In her inaugural address, Nandi-Ndaitwah pledged to bridge political divisions and revitalize Namibia’s economy. She emphasized job creation in key sectors such as agriculture, fishing, the creative industry, and sports. Her administration aims to address unemployment and foster inclusive growth, ensuring that all Namibians benefit from the country’s resources.
Tanzanian President Samia Hassan, who attended the ceremony, praised Namibia for making history by swearing in its first female president. She highlighted the significance of the moment for gender equality and leadership in Africa.
A New Chapter for Namibia
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s presidency marks a turning point for Namibia, symbolizing progress and the breaking of long-standing barriers. As she takes the helm, the nation looks forward to a future defined by unity, economic revitalization, and inclusive governance.
