The CDP has a total area of 18.1 square miles (47.0 km2), of which 12.9 square miles (33.5 km2) are land and 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), or 28.54 percent, is water, according to the United States Census Bureau. Three bays surround the hamlet, the Great Peconic Bay to the north and the bays of Shinnecock and Tiana to the south. In the New England Hurricane of 1938, the inlet itself, which separates the barrier beaches of Hampton Bays from those of neighboring Southampton, was formed when hurricane forces washed over the barrier beach area, linking the waters of the Atlantic with the bay.
The CDP of Hampton Bays is bounded to the south by the Atlantic Ocean; to the east by the Shinnecock Inlet and the eastern portion of Shinnecock Bay, beyond which lie the town of Southampton and the CDP of Shinnecock Hills; to the north by Great Peconic Bay, beyond which lie the towns of Southold and Riverhead; and to the CDPs of Flanders and East Quogue (still within the town of Southampton) to
Sunrise Highway (NY 27) serves Hampton Bays, which is a major artery to the western parts of Long Island and New York City. Montauk Highway (CR 80), a two-lane road which runs from New York City to Montauk, also serves the hamlet. Montauk Highway, along the south shore of Long Island, acts as the ‘Main Route’ of several towns and villages.
Seven days a week, via the Montauk Branch linking Hampton Bays to Montauk and New York City, the Long Island Rail Road offers limited rail service. Coach services from Hampton Jitney and Hampton Luxury Liner provide slightly more frequent travel between New York City and Hampton Bays for passengers, particularly during the summer months. Local buses from Suffolk County also provide service to nearby areas.
The waterways in the city, including the Shinnecock Canal, provide boats with invaluable routes.
