Olu Jacobs Biography, Family & Net Worth – The likes of Olu Jacob and other veteran actors who propelled Nollywood to what it is today in Africa will forever remain grateful to Nollywood. Since the veteran Nollywood actor has graced the silver screens for over four decades, the name ‘Olu Jacobs’ is not new to Nigerians. He is one of the most respected and oldest actors in Nigeria.

As many of his younger colleagues in the industry call him,’ Uncle Olu Jacobs’ has paved a fruitful path for many entertainment industry actors and actresses. The likes of him and some of the other older actors who first went through the barriers of film production when the organization was unfavorable.

Olu Jacobs has been praised by many as one of his generation’s greatest and most highly respected African actors. He is considered by many newspapers, film pundits, critics, and other actors to be one of the most popular African actors of all time, along with Pete Edochie, Justus Esiri, Enebeli Elebuwa and Sam Loco Efe, and is widely regarded as a cultural icon.

Olu Jacobs Biography

Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, (born July 11, 1942), known professionally as Olu Jacobs, is an award-winning, world-renowned veteran Nigerian actor and film executive born to Egba Alake parents in Ogun State. He grew up in Kano and attended school in the northern state as well. His passion for acting began at a young age when he received his secondary education as a member of the debate and drama society at Holy Trinity School. He has appeared in a variety of British TV shows and foreign movies.

Career

When he attended one of the annual concert parties of Chief Hubert Ogunde at the Colonial Hotel in Kano, Olu Jacobs was encouraged to take a chance at acting. He obtained a visa afterward and moved to England to study acting.

In England, he studied at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. In the 1970s (e.g. The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, Barlow at Large, The Venturers, Angels, 1990, The Tomorrow People, The Professionals), he then appeared in numerous British television shows and series. In 1978, in Michael Codron’s presentation of the play Night and Day by Sir Tom Stoppard, he played the part of President Mageeba.

Jacobs appeared in many foreign films in the 1980s, including the war film The Dogs of War by John Irvin, the adventure comedy Pirates by Roman Polanski (1986) and the family-adventure film Baby: Mystery of the Lost Legend (1985). On film, he was a cast member of The Witches and the Grinnygog on TVS.

Jacobs subsequently appeared in over 120 films in Nollywood. He’s considered one of Nollywood’s top Nigerian actors.

Acting Career

He then went to England to study art and enrolled in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. In the 1970s and ’80s, he appeared in many British television shows and foreign films. He starred in underground TV shows like Till Death Us Do Part, Barlow at Large, The Goodies when he was still in England. This was in the 70s.

In the 80s, when he appeared in movies such as; The Dogs of War, directed by John Irvin, the action-comedy Pirates by Roman Polanski, those old enough in the 80s will also recall the family adventure film Baby: Mystery of the Lost Legend, which also featured the veteran actor. The other foreign works of Olu Jacobs include ‘Barlow at Large,” The Venturers,” Angels,” 1990,” The People of Tomorrow,” The Professionals.’

On TV, he was cast in The Witches and the Grinnygoggs on TVS (1983 series). Olu Jacobs has appeared in over 150 Nollywood films in Nigeria.

He has been an inspiration for younger actors and aspiring actors in the industry today.

He received the African Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007 and was recognized for exceptional achievements in acting at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards with the Industry’s Merit Award in 2013.

Olu Jacobs has been married to Joke Silva, a Nollywood actress, since 1989 and they have two sons. Asked why his wife was still carrying her maiden name, Olu Jacobs answered:

Olu Jacobs is not one who allows the media to leave his personal life naked. The veteran actor has been married for over 30 years to Joke Silva, a co-thespian and famous actress, and they are blessed with two sons.

Joke Silva also uses her maiden name to run a school for future actors named the Lufodu Academy of Performing Arts.

Jacobs, explaining the story of how they met, says he met Joke at the Lagos National Theatre in 1981. It was during a rehearsal for Jero’s Metamorphosis by Wole Soyinka that he first laid eyes on her and realized that they were both meant to be.
