Unlink a Facebook account on Instagram – Instagram settings include a page devoted to the ‘Linked Accounts’ feature. It shows as you would imagine,… your linked accounts. Users have the option to connect, among others, to Twitter, Tumblr, and, of course, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook.
At first glance, the role appears very simple-apps that are not connected are shown in gray, apps that are linked appear in color. The feature can be deceptive when it comes to Facebook, however.
Unlink a Facebook account on Instagram – Like other platforms shown under Instagram’s Linked Accounts menu, the Facebook profile connection option is ostensibly disabled by default. Before Instagram shows the two as linked, users need to tap the grayed-out logo of the app and sign in. An Unlink Account option appears in Instagram settings when two profiles are linked. “Clicking there brings up a warning: “Unlinking makes it more difficult if you get locked out to access your Instagram account.
Common sense indicates that if you unlink your Instagram profile to a Facebook account, you have unlinked your Instagram profile to that Facebook account. But common sense does not always apply online, like many things on Facebook. A Facebook spokesperson told WIRED that clicking on Unlink Account does not automatically unlink a Facebook account from Instagram, so it is not possible to distinguish the two. Even if a user has never specifically linked their profiles on Facebook and Instagram, they are fundamentally linked and will continue to be damned, regardless of how many times you mash Unlink Account.
That’s because the wealth of knowledge that Facebook gathers through its various services is more than enough to properly identify and connect the different accounts of users to each other. Facebook is also able to suss out who is actually behind the account and whether they have accounts on other Facebook-owned apps, even in cases where a different name, email address, or computer was used to build each account, be it a throwaway WhatsApp profile, stalker Instagram account, or joke Facebook profile. “As infrastructure, systems, and technology are shared by Facebook and Instagram, we link information about your activities across our services based on a variety of signals,” a Facebook spokesperson told WIRED. “It doesn’t affect this by linking or unlinking your accounts in the app.”
Unlink a Facebook account on Instagram – When Facebook works to merge previously separate apps such as Instagram and WhatsApp, the disclosure arrives. Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp are merged (problematic enough on their own) into one mega chat app, while Instagram and WhatsApp have been rechristened as Facebook Instagram and Facebook WhatsApp.
But even though the apps are more closely woven together, in the minds of Facebook executives, they’re not all comparable. On Instagram, the Linked Accounts feature tends to funnel traffic to Facebook, where user growth has flatlined, as the growth of Instagram continues apace. Facebook, meanwhile, made a controversial decision last year to avoid funneling traffic to Instagram.
The spokesperson said that shortly after it purchased Instagram in 2012, Facebook started connecting accounts behind the scenes based on data that it had collected regarding users. The spokesperson said that this information about user behaviors is gathered and connected by Facebook to give users a “personalized experience” across all applications under the company’s umbrella, such as more specifically targeted advertising or in-app suggestions based on a merging of cross-platform activities of the user.
Unlink a Facebook account on Instagram – The reality of this “personalized experience” can prove confusing for users who assumed that they could keep different accounts apart. The spokesperson noted that this information could be used by Facebook to recommend that a user enters a Facebook community that includes people who follow or talk with over Messenger on Instagram. That could raise privacy issues for users who want their behavior separated from their primary Facebook profile on an unlinked Instagram account.
The ties between these accounts on the backend pose additional challenges. Some users who set out to build Finstagrams complain that they have found their new accounts connected to their prime Facebook profiles, resulting in a notification to follow their supposedly private Finsta from all their colleagues, half-acquaintances, and distant relatives.
