What is Facebook Dating?

Facebook is pitching the latest dating app as a way for users to connect meaningfully through shared interests (i.e., similar interests and groups). It’s meant to alleviate the hassle of having a separate dating profile, and it also integrates Instagram, allowing you to share Instagram posts directly from your dating profile and add both Facebook friends and Instagram followers to hidden crush lists.

You can, understandably, be skeptical of Facebook Dating. After all, seeking a partner is a highly personal endeavor, even though conducted online. As a result, you must opt-in in order to use Facebook Dating. Additionally, you’ll be able to report and block individuals, preventing them from sending you pictures, videos, and messages, among other things.

Other key features:

  • You should integrate your Instagram posts into your Facebook Dating profile.
  • You can join Events and Groups to connect with others who share your interests, but keep in mind that you will also be visible to them.
  • You can share information about a date – like your live place – with a friend on Facebook Messenger to help you feel more secure on a date.
  • By year’s end, Facebook will allow you to add Facebook and Instagram Stories to your dating profile as well.

How does Facebook Dating work?

Set up your profile

Update the Facebook iOS or Android app to the most recent version. Facebook Dating will appear in a new tab inside the Facebook mobile app’s main menu. Visit this page to sign up for Facebook Dating and build a Dating profile (separate from your main profile).

You can enter personal information about yourself, such as your height, religion, job title, degrees and education, and whether you have children. Additionally, Facebook can recommend images and information from your Facebook profile when you create your dating profile, which you can edit or delete.

Note: You must be 18 years or older to use Facebook Dating.

Finding a match

During registration, Facebook Dating will ask you to define your gender and the gender(s) of the people with whom you wish to match. You’ll see inclusive gender choices such as cis woman, trans woman, cis male, trans man, and non-binary guy, as well as the choice to choose whether you’re interested in anyone, women, men, trans women, or trans men. No details about you will be shared with future matches.

You’ll be recommended to those who have opted into Facebook Dating, and matches will be made based on your likes, interests, and “other things you do on Facebook.” You’ll run into friends of friends and people who are not part of your social circle. Facebook Dating will not link you with your Facebook friends unless each of you add one another to your “Hidden Crush” lists. (More on this in a moment.)

Contacting a match

If you’re interested in anyone, there’s no need to swipe. Simply leave a message on their Facebook Dating profile or tap the Like button to express your interest. You can opt out if you are uninterested. Any of your activities on Facebook Dating will remain private and will not be posted on Facebook.

What is a Secret Crush list?

Secret Crush allows you to connect with people you meet from Facebook and Instagram. You can build a Secret Crush list with up to nine of your Facebook friends or Instagram followers. (However, in order to add Instagram followers, your Instagram account must be linked to Facebook Dating.)

These individuals will then receive a message informing them that someone has a crush on them. If your crush even adds you to their list of Secret Crushes, you’re a match. However, if your crush is not using Facebook Dating, has not created a Secret Crush list, or has not added you to their list, they will remain unaware.
