Four steps to naming your Shopify business – Shopify Inc. is a multinational e-commerce firm based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Its unique e-commerce platform for online retailers and retail point-of-sale systems is also called that. Shopify provides a range of services to online businesses, including payment processing, marketing, shipping, and customer engagement tools.
As of May 2021, the company said that its platform was used by over 1,700,000 enterprises in around 175 countries. According to Builtwith, Shopify is used by 1.58 million websites as of 2021. For the calendar year 2019, the total gross merchandise volume surpassed US$61 billion. Shopify is the largest publicly traded Canadian corporation in terms of market value as of 2021. For the entire year of 2020, total revenue was $2.929 billion.
This four-step process will help you name your business. In this example, I’m creating a name for a Shopify business that conveys a high-tech and usable digital solution that enables effortless online shopping. Here’s each step I took in crafting these businesses
Four steps to naming your Shopify business names.
1. Brainstorm your name ideas
Begin by thinking of words that could be used in your company’s name. I used adjectives like digital, international, one-click, direct, unique, and online in my name suggestions. These terms are suggestive of a simple web-based buying experience, and you should look for words with similar meanings. The idea is to make a list of terms or names that come to mind when you think of your company.
2. Shortlist your ideas
Analyze your thoughts after you’ve compiled a list of probable names. Remove any names that are difficult to remember, spell, or pronounce. Keep names that are memorable, brandable, and express your brand values, product, or service to your target audience.
Here’s a fast checklist you may use to help you narrow down your name options:
- Is the name simple and easy to remember?
- Is the name easy to read and say aloud?
- Is the name different from competitors?
- Does the name convey a relevant meaning?
- Does the name avoid overused words or cliches?
3. Get some feedback
You should now have a list of 3-6 great Shopify business names to ask for feedback from potential clients or industry professionals (your target audience). Family and friends are more likely to appreciate all of your ideas, yet they aren’t your customers, so avoid getting feedback from them.
Be sure to ask questions like:
- What first comes to mind when you first hear the name?
- How would you spell it?
With you’re customer feedback you can now ask yourself is the name still relevant? and did it represent your business how you intended?
My customer feedback:
This name is fun and it uses wordplay to be industry-relevant.
This name highlights the origin of Shopify products, which could be important for some buyers.
This name tells buyers the exact benefit of doing a bit of online shopping.
This name adds a bit of specialization instead of just focusing on Shopify ecommerce.
4. Check It’s available
It’s a good idea to have at least three great Shopify business names on your list at this time, just in case any of them are already taken. You can run a quick Business Name Search online to see whether your name is available in your country/state, and also to see if it is available for Trademark and Domain Name Registration.
