How to Unfriend and Unfollow People on Facebook

How to Unfriend and Unfollow People on Facebook.

Meta Platforms owns Facebook, an American online social media and social networking website. It was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, together with other Harvard College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, and takes its name from the face book directories that are commonly provided to American university students. Initially, membership was restricted to Harvard students, but it has subsequently expanded to include students from other North American colleges and, since 2006, everyone over the age of 13. Facebook had 2.8 billion monthly active users as of 2020, placing it seventh in worldwide internet usage. It was the most popular smartphone app in the decade of 2010.

Maybe your sister-in-law won’t stop sharing images of her dog, or your cousin’s political rants are clogging up your newsfeed. Perhaps you’ve recently ended a relationship and don’t want to see images of your ex out on the dating scene.

And, in many situations, a fast scan of your “friends” list will reveal dozens of people you don’t know and don’t need to keep in touch with.

Whatever reasons you have for wanting to unfriend, unfollow, or block a Facebook friend are entirely up to you; fortunately, the actual unfriending process is far less complicated than the intricate webs of interpersonal concerns that motivate you to do so.

Unfriend someone on Facebook in just two clicks

A word of caution: unfriending someone on Facebook is almost too easy, and while they won’t notice (unless they check their list of friends), if you wish to re-establish the link, they’ll notice you unfriended them when they receive a new Add Friend request.

So make sure you want to go ahead and do it…

1. Go to the person’s Facebook page or search for them in your friends list.

2. Click on the gray box that says “Friends” and has a checkbox before the word.

3. Click “Unfriend” at the bottom of the dropdown menu that opens.

And with that, the connection is broken. You will no longer be able to view their postings, and they will not be able to see yours. Is it really necessary to unfriend someone, or is there a better way?

On Facebook, you can automatically “Follow” all of your friends, and you may also “Follow” other pages without being friends, such as that of an artist or a company. Anyone you follow can post to your feed, and their posts can frequently be the cause of frustration that leads you to consider unfriending them in the first place.

Instead, go to the person’s page and unfollow them by clicking the “Following” box at the top right of the screen. After that, click “Unfollow [Their Name].”

You will no longer be served content created or shared by that person, but you will remain friends. You can return to following at any moment.

If unfriending isn’t enough and you don’t want to communicate with someone on Facebook again, it’s time to block them (people you unfriend can still send you messages and new friend requests).

On their profile, click the three dots in a gray box beside the word “Message” at the top right of the screen (as shown above), then select “Block” from the dropdown menu.
