Lagos City Post Codes and Zip Codes – Lagos, sometimes referred to as Lagos State to differentiate it from the Lagos Metropolitan Area, is a Nigerian state located in the country’s southwestern geopolitical region. Lagos State is the smallest of Nigeria’s 36 states, but with a population of over 15 million, it is arguably the most economically significant, as it contains Lagos, the country’s largest urban region. It is a significant financial center and, if it were a nation, would have the fifth-largest economy in Africa.

It is the most populous state in Nigeria. Between the official 2006 Nigerian Census and a far higher figure reported by the Lagos State Government, the real population total is disputed. Lagos State’s annual gross domestic product is one trillion naira.

On the north and east, Lagos State is surrounded by Ogun State. It shares western borders with the Republic of Benin. It is bounded on the south by the Atlantic Ocean. Lagoons and creeks cover 22% of its 3,577 km2 surface.

Victoria Island, the city’s financial hub, is renowned for its beach resorts, boutiques, and nightlife. To the north, on Lagos Island, the National Museum Lagos houses cultural objects and handicrafts. Freedom Park, once a colonial-era jail, is nearby and serves as a major venue for concerts and public events.

Prior to the Portuguese naming of Lagos, the city’s original name was Ipinle Eko, which referred primarily to the island. The Aworis were the first to settle in Eko. The Awori hunters and fishermen originally came to the coast from Ile-Ife.

Lagos State was established on 27 May 1967 by Decree No. 14 of 1967, which restructured Nigeria into a Federation of 12 states. Prior to the promulgation of this Decree, Lagos, the country’s capital, was governed directly by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Lagos Affairs. Ikeja, Agege, Mushin, Ikorodu, Epe, Surulere, and Badagry, on the other hand, were ruled by the Western Region Government at the time. Lagos, the capital, and these other towns were incorporated into the state of Lagos on 11 April 1968, when the state was officially recognized as a semi-autonomous administrative division. Lagos served as both the State and Federal Capital until 1976, when the state capital was relocated to Ikeja. On 12 December 1991, following the complete establishment of the Federal Capital Territory, the Federal Government’s seat of government was also officially moved to Abuja. Nonetheless, Lagos remains the country’s financial hub and has grown to become the state’s and country’s most populous city.
