In January 2020, the Nigerian film industry, popularly known as Nollywood, began documenting the deaths of its practitioners with the death of actress Jennifer Omole, who died on January 3, 2020.

Actors and Actresses in Nollywood  – After receiving the news of the demise of the veteran actress and filmmaker Chizoba Boye, who died on 10 May 2020, the family of Chizoba Boye and the motion picture industry in Nigeria were thrown into mourning. Following a brief illness, the actress died. Chizoba Boye is the wife of Sam Boye, a veteran Nollywood filmmaker, and she was a frequent face on the ‘Tinsel’ television series. She was a big Nollywood Igbo supporter and will be remembered for her pioneering role in Nollywood in Slavery, Checkmate, Scandals, and other top hit films. She was also a producer and presenter, aside from her role in Tinsel. A star feature on DSTV’s Igbo Channel was her Igbo comedy series, ‘Ka Anyi Si Ebi. Set in modern-day Lagos, it was the first Nigerian Igbo Film. Whilst her husband directed it, she produced the drama series.

  1. Jennifer Omole

On 3 January 2020, at the age of 33, the Nigerian actress, Jennifer Omole, passed away in Spain. The next evening, at Villarejo de Salvanes, Madrid, she was buried. The sad news about the death of Jennifer was shared on Instagram by her close friend and colleague, Uche Ogbodo. Although her friends revealed that she had recently moved to the United Kingdom, Omole was a member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Spain chapter, where she was based. She came from the state of Edo. Jennifer was a movie maker and the CEO of JennisFilms Production Ltd. until her death. The news of her demise was confirmed by Okechukwu Oku, the famous Nollywood movie director. On his official Instagram account, he announced her death, saying that he was very saddened to hear the news. He said in his post: “Why is death taking away the best people?” I’m confused. On my 2 last ventures, I just filmed with Mama here, eager to release it and this terrible news today. A lady with a golden heart, Aah no. Mrs. Dike, I’ll miss you. Nollywood’s got a gem lost in you. This is messed up. Emilia Dike has starred in hit movies such as Ignorant Couples, Dust of Yesterday, Kings Guard, and many more in Nollywood.

Ace Yoruba actor Toyosi Arigbabuwo died after fighting an unidentified disease for over six months on 13 January 2020 at his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State in the southwestern part of Nigeria. Several Yoruba movies have starred the veteran actor. He devoted his life to the promotion of Islamic religion, especially in the Oyo State local government area of Ido in the south-western part of Nigeria, where he lived until his death. He was the PRO of Apete-Awotan-Ayegun and nearby areas of the Muslim community in Oyo State, Nigeria. Actors and Actresses in Nollywood  – According to a police investigation, Yoruba actor Juwon Awe was killed by bandits in Ote, Kwara State, in the south-western part of Nigeria on Monday, 27 January 2020. The news of his death was confirmed on the night of the incident by his colleague, Ibrahim Chatta, using his official Instagram handle. The deceased was murdered by armed men while traveling from Ilorin with a female actress, Toyosi Adesanya, according to Ibrahim Chatta. He wrote: “He was promising and young, full of hope.” As a continuity consultant and a driver struggling to make ends meet, Juwon Awe served in my industry. Today, while driving with a well-known female star, Toyosi Adesanya from Ilorin, he was attacked and murdered by three Fulani and Yoruba armed bandits.

Frank Dallas, the veteran Nollywood actor, and production manager dies after suffering cardiac arrest in his hotel room on 19 February 2020. The actor who was usually referred to in movies as “Adedibu” or “Killer” allegedly died while attending a summit in Umuahia, Abia State. The deceased, who came from Ohafia in Abia State, was the former public relations officer of the Lagos branch of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). In an election held in 2019, Monalisa Chinda Coker defeated him to emerge as the AGN national PRO. Dallas, who was renowned in Nollywood movies for his action roles, started his acting career in the early 90s.
